Oakland Eats: Juhu Beach Club Chef Preeti Mistry juhu-beach-club-oakland

Juhu Beach Club in Temescal offers comfort food with a welcome Mumbai twist.

When Bon Appetite Magazine finally came to declare Oakland as a destination for foodies (duh!), Juhu Beach Club was one of the article's gems. The tucked-away, laid back restaurant is a local favorite, too, featuring comfort food with a welcome Mumbai twist and a unique, kitsch-exotic decor (think wallpaper abundant with dapper monkeys, vintage fans as lighting fixtures and more). Top Chef alumnus Preeti Mistry stared her tasty adventure as a San Francisco pop-up, and opened the Temescal brick and mortar location two years ago to an instant group hug from Oakland eaters. What moved you to open Juhu Beach Club permanently and why in that location? My pop-up was in SF, but I moved to Oakland while I was doing pop-ups so I wanted the restaurant to be in Oakland. I live in the neighborhood and the place was in really good condition overall. We were able to make cosmetic changes and open in 2 1/2 months. Why this type of cuisine? I wanted to bring Indian cuisine to people that was different from other restaurants that serves dishes outside of the "naan and curry" spots. I also cook seasonal, sustainably sourced food . What do you think about the recent changes of the local dining scene? It's great to see so many new restaurants in Oakland. It is a fantastic destination. Were do you like to eat out and drink in Oakland? I like to go to The Boot and Shoe Service on Grand Ave., Bar Dogwood in Uptown, Hawker Fare, Fusebox. Were do you relax in Oakland? We like to go to Montclair Golf Course. It's a really fun way to chill out. Also, going for bike rides and walking around the lake. Were would you take friends out of town and why? I would take out of town friends to Haven in Jack London Square. It's a great spot, the food is fantastic and being right on the water is so nice. Were did you get that amazing wallpaper? We found it online somewhere. Honestly, I don't remember. It's pretty awesome, though, and kids love it too!
